This particular canyon stretch only runs about 6 miles and the project proposes to take water from 3 miles of it.There are many reasons this project should not be constructed, and NO reason that it should!Modoc County is located in the northeast corner of California. The proposed project area is about 4 miles east of the town of Likely off Highway 395, about 20 miles south of Alturas, the Modoc County seat. This map shows the six mile stretch of river from the actual headwaters of the South Fork Pit River at the top, downstream to the bridge at the point the river leaves the steep canyon and flows on toward Likely and eventually to the Sacramento River and out to sea. While the area is rural and isolated, this proposed project location is not “out in the middle of nowhere.” The various massive structures (1000 square feet, 20 feet high.) would be visible from a public road and within sight and hearing of several homes. But most importantly, a large portion of a really nice river would be drastically altered. (article continues ...) |
