Dear Editor, The proposed hydro-electric project on the South Fork Pit River near Likely would almost completely drain three miles of beautiful trout stream. All year round. The “Gateway to the Warners” would become three miles of a permanent trickle! The beautiful river you drive alongside and admire on the way up to Blue Lake or Mill Creek Falls. The great pools you like to stop and fish in… or take a picture… or paint one. The stream that is so pretty to walk next to, where you can see the kingfisher fly along, western tanagers, hawks, ducks, deer. People live here. They want to take the water out between West Valley Creek by the Modoc National Forest sign, all the way up past Old Blue Lake Road and Juniper Acres to near that big grassy turnout where folks like to camp. The water would instead be taken into West Valley Reservoir for a power plant. This isn’t even some isolated crummy backroad area nobody would ever visit. They want to put a power plant next to somebody’s house! And another on the banks of West Valley Reservoir! Put West Valley Creek inside a big pipe. And drain a huge part of the river that you can see from the main road! This project would not bring jobs or benefit to the county. The materials and specialized equipment will be brought in from elsewhere, the very small amount of power generated will be sold. This is a private business project using public land. The South Fork Irrigation District, Alturas Ranches, and their Idaho engineer may have thought it was a good idea to profit from the California energy crisis a few years ago. It is not a good idea now! I urge everyone in the community to file a letter of protest by May 2nd, with the Federal Government. By mail or on your computer at www.ferc.gov. For more information call Susan O’Brien of FERC at (202) 502-8449, email susan.obrien@ferc.gov, or go to the website www.ferc.gov. Project No. 12053-001. |
