Comments: Hello Pat. As a resident of Laketown I was very glad to see an interest in the "Felt Mansion" as printed in the Grand Rapids Press (1/20/01).I've walked the site many times in my 23 years here in the Holland area and always wanted to know more about the history of this beautiful structure. In my quest for more information I know of two gentleman that worked on the "Felt Farm" as they call it during Its heyday. One is in his 80's and the other in his 90's. Fortunately they are of sound mind and body and can still recall many stories of living and working there. Hopefully someone can record this tiny piece of history before it is forever lost. Thanks for the website!

I was so excited by our phone conversation that I had to run right up here and read the G.R. Press article to Uncle Art. Mom and Dad are here now and all of us really enjoyed the photo tour of the house. Both Uncle Art and Dad have many memories of visits to see Uncle Ralph and Aunt Anna. I am bringing a few stories with me on Wednesday when we meet. They have many stories that will interest you. Uncle Art's e-mail is listed above. Comments: Dear Meyer's, The Felt Mansion was first shown to me in the spring of 2000 and I was just amazed when I layed my eyes on it. I thought it was so magnificent and beautiful that right then and there I wanted it. I would imagine so many great things I could do with it and the possibilities were endless for me. Anyway, I'm 19 now and going on 20 and I would LOVE to help save The Felt Mansion. Saving that mansion would be so awesome because it would have made the Felt family so proud and grateful to know that people wanted to save their hard work that they put so much pride into. What you guys are doing is wonderful and I hope we can get a BIG team to get this goal done. I am with you guys 100% and am willing to help in any way that I can. Thanks for your determination and God bless.-Lindsay Noel P.S. I was such a stinker that I would carefully remove pieces of boarded up windows just so I could get a peek of what was inside. I was willing to do anything just so I could see what was in that house. Now I can't wait to take that tour, I'm so ANXIOUS!=)

Comments: I read the G.R. Press article and checked out your web site. Great pictures. I remember visiting the park years ago and wondering about the house. It was like a hidden treasure of architecture and history, and having much potential if preserved. I hope the Laketown township officials will act to enable the mansion and surrounding structures to be saved. There are many avenues to explore, such as applying for state and federal historical preservation grants, obtaining tax exempt status, solicitation of in-kind tax deductible contributions of labor and materials, contacting Home and Garden TV and This Old House for possible exposure and suggestions, establishing and promoting fund-raising historic home tour weekends, soliciting supervised work groups from various public interest organizations. contacting those responsible for restorations of other significant homes for advice on how to proceed, creation of a donor's organization and recognition of contributors, developing a promotional brochure, keeping the media informed, targeting gifts for specific needs such as "buy a window". Will be in touch. Success to a worthwhile project!

Comments: Thanks so much to all of you who have left messages here and through e-mail and phone calls. The response has been fantastic. We live in a very generous land. I'm privileged to be part of a project that gives me exposure to so many great people who willingly give of their time and talents. Much love to all of you. Together we can make this world a better place. I am in the process of doing many of the projects stated in Ed Hekman's excellent message (above). Grants require matching funds --- so application for grants is on hold until we secure some money. But many of the other items he mentioned are underway. I am simply waiting for the "okay" from the township to proceed further in these efforts. Feel free to contact them with a voice of encouragement for the project. The contact person is listed on the website. Thanks again. -Pat Meyer

Each time we visit the park we(dad, mom, and 2 daughters) stop up at the house and can only imagine what it was like in its heyday. Comments: Hello All, I read with great interest this morning (Sunday, January 20, 2002)the article featuring the Dorr E. Felt Mansion. I am 20 years old and I live in a very historic home here in Coopersville, Michigan. I have spent nearly 10 years myself researching the history of the 468 Center St. home and I have found many interesting facts about the many former residents... In fact the true man who invented the Compact Disc grew up in my home as a child and into his teenage years moving with his family in 1955 to Florida at the age of 17. As I have a great passion for history and preserving history, I firmly believe in also helping others who do similar work. So with that being said, I would love to donate personally $150.00 to "The Save the Felt Estate Committee." As time goes on I will be glad to further support with additional donations.... I will send out a check as soon as possible, please to not be alarmed if it is a week or two before you receive the check, but I promise I will send a donation. I am very happy to help, but as I am in college until May my schedule does not permit for me to get out to Holland and physically lend a hand to labor work... Once I am out of college for the summer I will be able to work something into my schedule, I will keep you posted!! Again I truly enjoyed reading the lengthy article regarding the Dorr E. Felt Mansion and your trying to preserve it, I commend you and your family and all those who are trying to help preserve the history of such a magnificent home!!! Keep up the Great Work!! All The Best!!! I am surprised at the negligence that the Laketown officials have shown in failure to care for this History Nugget. It is time that they see the light and get onboard, we don't need another basketball court, or such. I will provide support as the Electrical contractor. Comments: As a Laketown township resident I have been greatly interested in seeing the mansion restored and supported the efforts several years ago of someone willing to do so with their own funds. The "public use" issue got in the way, howvever. I walk the dunes several times a week during the summer, and sky in the winter, when snow is available. This beautiful building needs to be saved, and the land around it as well. Are you aware of the efforts to bisect the park with a water line and treatment plant? Perhaps contacting the Concerned Citizens for Saugatuck Dunes State Park would be beneficial. They can be contacted at P.O. Box 1136 Saugatuck MI 49453. As I mentioned, I live in the area and would be very willing to donate my time in the restoration efforts. Keep me informed as clean-up efforts begin to organize. I'll be there!! Jerry

Comments: Dear Pat, I read with great interest the Grand Rapids Press newspaper clipping that my mother sent me. The reason for this is that I grew up on Belvedere Farm (www.thebelvedereinn.com), another great summer estate not far from Shore Acres, built by a wealthy Chicago family in 1913. My parents owned the Belvedere mansion for 2 1/2 decades and I spent part of my childhood living in the mansion, and, in 1975, extensively researched the property's history, as well as that of other great “Gilded Age” summer estates of Saugatuck and Holland. Included in my research was the history of Shore Acres and Dorr Eugene Felt. I was lucky that his daughter, Constance Tippens, was living at the time and loved talking about her father's estate and her summers spent there. We had lively conversations about the estate. I spoke with her again as the estate was being converted to a prison by the state. She was mystified the beautiful property, which was studded with wild flowers in season – planted by her father, could be used such a purpose. I also visited the Felt mansion at the time, which was then a nuns convent. As a child, I vividly remember the Felt animal cages remaining from the zoo, which were built into the dunes on the private drive en route to the mansion. As teenagers, we used to dare each other to drive by the cages at night, especially on Halloween, and conjured up wonderful ghost stories involving the supposed denizens of the "caves." Belvedere's history is also linked to that of Shore Acre's - a great and somewhat fantastic story I would love to share you if you are interested. I think what you and your husband are doing is wonderful. I assisted the person who comprehensively restored the Belvedere mansion recently, which was great fun. I have always hoped someone would restore Mr. Felt's mansion as well. With very best regards, Ken Ellens KenEllens@aol.com

I would love to own something like the Felt home and return it to it's splendor. My husband is an engineer, if we can help in some way we are talented in many areas of restoration. It is too bad the home has stipulations that are preventing someone like the Meyer's from doing something more with the property. There are many governmental agencies that can offer monitary aid and information on getting funding for historical landmarks. Also check with libraries for additional information on which agencies can help with this project.

Comments: thanks again for all of your interest! ... Just a word about public grants... While they are a great idea, and we plan to apply for them, they are not a quick or efficient means of garnering funds. For example, Laketown Township is just now spending 1997 grant money. This is not the township's fault. The grant application/acceptance and fund disbursement process is SOOOO lengthy and unbelievably complex. The paperwork is simply atrocious. (And highly unnecessary in my estimation.) I'm convinced that the sheer volume of information required is a deterent to all but the most determined and patient. While I am determined and, okay not that patient, but determined -- the house will not wait five years for funds. The amount of damage then will be so much more than now. We need funds THIS year, not three to five years from now (which is the typical turnaround for grant monies). - Pat

Comments: Dear Pat, I've been in touch with you as you know. I spent four years (1952-1956) as a seminarian and lived in the mansion and then for many a summer thereafter. I returned in 1966 to teach Theology and Latin in the new seminary building built across the road from the mansion which no longer exists. As seminarians we kept the interior of the mansion in immaculate condition--the woodwork and floors, and grounds all around the mansion trimmed and cared for. I too was sorry to see the state of it when I returned a couple of years ago. Your determination and your patience is to be lauded. I'll support you in any way I can. Peace

Comments: My interest in historic homes goes back to the 1970s when I was on the committee that set up the historic distric in the city of Holland. I was also on the Cappon House Guild and was employed at the Holland Museum (then Netherlands Museum) Several years ago my husband Ron and I toured the Felt Mansion and we were impressed with this historic house and were sad that it was going into decay. We are very glad to see that something is being done and wish you great success. When I first read the story in the G.R. Press I was very excited but not very encouraged. After all what can one couple do? Then that same week I watched a program on Historic Homes on the HGTV channel about a woman who saw a decaying historic mansion in the Seattle, WA area. Within 18 months she had lots and lots of volunteers, both professional contractors and just ordinary people and they were able to restore enough of the home's public rooms to begin using it for wedding receptions and other functions to begin bringing in funds for further restorations. I'm sorry I didn't write down the details as it would be a real inspiration. We'll be by soon to meet you. -Mary and Ron Voss, 5373 143rd Ave. Holland, MI 49423

The house is, indeed, a treasure. Though the family landscaping business (Demminks Nursery) has been discontinued, I can still use a rake and shovel to assist in the restoration of the grounds. I see no mention of the wind powered generators which Mr. Felt built, the concrete foundation of which still exists on a high lakeshore dune. Info on preventing the proposed construction of a water treatment facility in the park can be requested at swanswan@i2k.com . We are very interested in the history of old homes, & the families behind them. 01/20/02 my boyfriend found the article, and of course we were both very interested in it, seeing that we had been there, and at the time were very curious about the history of the place. Once the Michigan weather broke alitte, we took a drive down to see it again. We would love to see the place restored also, just hate to see it used for Weddings, B&B or restarant. We realize that this would be a great way to raise funds for the restoration, but not something that everyone would be able to enjoy as if it were a museum. I see someelse has already offered quilts for the beds. I also am a quilter, and would love to give a hand in that area. Keep up the Good work! I'm glad to know that family members are still around and can bring so much knowledge to the history of the mansion. Many people have provided wonderful pictures and stories of life there. When people say "we lived there," often it means somewhere on the estate. There was, after all at one time five or six farmhouses, the mansion, and the garage apartments. So "living there" has come to mean anywhere on the estate. Thanks for taking the time to say hi. -Pat Meyer

Comments: Hello All, I spent my teenage years at St. Augustine's Seminary which included the Felt estate and all its land and miles of beach. It was home. Actually, the Augustinian Order held and cared for the home longer than the Felt's - for 30 years! (E.D. Felt home 1928-1948; Augustinian Seminary 1948-1978. I've had the pleasure of talking with Mary Schmidt (grand daughter of Mr. Felt) via e-mail sharing fond memories during its early and later years. They were golden. While it was sad to feel its loss as a home, I'm glad that the property (State Park) and the former residence (the estate house) now resides in the public domain and trust. Everyone can now enjoy the beauty of the land and mansion. Best wishes

Comments: I went on a recent vacation up to Michigan and accidentally stumbled on the Felt Mansion. I knew nothing about it or its history, but was overtaken by the beauty. I peered through the windows and even climbed the three story fire escape staircase to look inside the upper floors. Afterwards, I went back to the hotel I was staying at to inquire about it. I got mixed information about it, but have a strong curiousity to learn its whole history. The workmanship and grounds are amazing. They look like something out of a haunted house novel. I live about four hours south of Michigan, in Ohio, but yet I am still trying to keep a close eye on the happenings at the house.

When I heard about the restoration project I was exstatic to finally be able to solve the mystery and get an up close and personal look at it. Although I've just moved to Washington, I have not lost any interest in the project and can't wait to see the mansion completely restored on a visit back to the surronding area. Good luck on all of your efforts!

Comments: From 1965-1969,I attended St. Augustine Prep Seminary and spent significant time in the mansion. Despite the fact that the seminary had a much larger main building, the mansion served as home for the Augustinian Prior as well as several priests, who were faculty members. Not only did I serve mass there, I also had responsibility for cleaning parts of the mansion as all students were assigned jobs. When I visited the gounds a few years back,it was boarded up so I am pleased to know that the beautiful interior is still in good shape. The exterior was pretty shabby and the once beautful pond area was overgown with weeds. The mansion was actually the main seminary building for many years where students lived before the new building went up. They attended school in a separate red schoolhouse building behind the mansion near the tennis courts on the gounds.

I first heard about the mansion on WGRD during some Halloween special, and have added it to my research list. When I found out it was open during a "yard sale" I had to make the trip out. The work that has been done, the history, and the dedication is truly amazing. I wish I lived closer so I could be of some help. I can't wait to return next year and see the changes. I'm also interested in the history of the building behind the mansion if anyone has information on that. (I believe it was a reformatory????)

In those years, I never got inside the mansion as it was a cloistered convent for the Augustinian Sisters, from Spain. They operated a bakery which served the seminary for a few years. They were outside only occasionally and we were never allowed entrance past a gated area. The property had a dormant orchard, several beach roads to a brick beach house on the lake and other houses. Legend has it that aligators were kept in the pond just south of the Mansion. The seminary students are spread throughout the world. Many are in Rome and missions in Peru and Japan. And many live in all 50 states. If volunteers are needed, we may be able to put together a work crew for a weekend or a few days. Best wishes.

I really hope it is. Anyways, polterguists are the only paranormal beings that move things, or can move for that matter. But they don't stay in one place for very long, they're always moving, or are the 'ghosts' Agnes and Dorr? Please email me and answer me. Katie

Comments: Grew up never knowing anything about the Felt Mansion but I did know about St. Augustines. My friends and I would drive over there just to look at it in all its glory. I had 2 brothers who actually worked at the prison as guards till it closed down. I'm saddened that they had to tear the St. Augustine part down and I never took the opportunity to get a closer look. I went recently with my neice who is a Saugatuck history buff and who clued me on on this site as well. What a magnificent house it still is! I can't even imagine what it would have looked like in its DAY. Thank you for providing this site the historical pictures were amazing!

Comments: My father was a State Trooper stationed at the Felt Mansion from 1978 until 1988. My brother and I remember going the the mansion with my father and while he would work, my brother and I would run around the house. We use to love going to the 3rd floor ballroom and the crow's nest. There were rumors that the house was haunted as the prisoners at the prison would report seeing lights going on and off throughout the house when no one was there. The State Police only used one room of the house (the one on the east side, closest to the fountain. I think my father may have some pictures from that time frame and I will check with him.

Some of my relatives i guess were some of the last people to go in the mansion before the reconstruction started to happen. I was going to go but something came up. And I REALLY regret not going now, with the stories they came back with! It was amazing with what they were telling me and i didnt want to believe it, but it sounded like they had the best time. I would like to possibly have more information on the mansion about tours, overnighters, really anything that is happening their. I'm not yet engaged, but soon to be and i would like to see the mansion before anything else happens, becuase I think it would be the most funniest wedding and reception place ever!!! If you could please e-mail me back with any info. that would be GREAT and i appreciate everything you and the crew have done!! ~Kaylyn~

Comments: I Went to school with Pat Hoezee Meyer (Hi Pat!). I also love history, my dad was a history teacher for many years. I Have worked for the City of Grand Rapids 19 years, five of them in the Neighborhood Improvement Dept. This dept. is deeply involved with housing rehab, code enforcement, building and trade permits, etc. It would be great to have a volunteer day that would involve City building/rehab dpts in Kent/Ottawa/Allegan county. Do you have a plan? --well, of course you do. I just wonder how it is structured and what your priority/wish list looks like. As I looked at your web site, other things popped into my head. You've probably already though of them: Have a contest for landscape design (maybe MI St. program students or landscapers in the tri-county area). The winning designer would then work with the committee to section the design into parts and get plantings and materials donated. Volunteers could help with the install and Master Gardeners from the tri-county area could help with volunteer maintenance. Another thought is to have some volunteer expertise from the Grand Rapids Museum's Voight House folks; I'm sure they are a great resource. Another resource would be the Heritage Hill folks. You could also cater to the interior design folks and have a designer showcase where they each redo a room. I believe a mansion restoration on the east side of the state did this. OR! With all the DYI shows on cable, you should check their web sites to try to get them interested and be a part of a show. You could get some major freebies that way. Oprah (don't laugh) has a design guy that comes out and does amazing makeovers on rooms, landscape designs, etc. Since your site is a few hrs drive from Chi-town it would be worth it to put in a request (see web stie for details). Ok...must get back to work now. I'm now working as an Administrative Analyst in the Water Dept. If you have any water problems....;)

Comments: Hi All- We visited the estate last night for a tour of the Christmas lights and trees and have to say it was the most beautiful presentation, and we really enjoyed it! Thanks to all invloved for their efforts and hard work in sharing the Holiday spirit with this beautiful and very special place. The number of people who showed (in our opinion) looked like a great turn-out and it was great to see so many interested in this project and GORGEOUS home. During our time walking through we heard many conversations going on around us and realized just how many people have no idea who Dorr Felt was or what he accomplished in life. To alot of these visitors it seemed as though it was just a big old house to them! :-) -One of the many great parts of the tour is being inside this great man's library. A very special thanks must be given to the one's responsible for putting together the wonderful scrapbook/photo album of the history of this great estate. We've done alot of research ourselves on the great history of this very special place as well as the people who spent time here, but also realize that not everyone knows the story. I think those who did not know when they arrived, were able to leave knowing at least some of the great history thanks to the presenters, guides and yes, the scrapbook. :-) -We thank all of you who's hearts are filled with great love and admiration for this very special place, as ours are as well. The quote says it best: "Nothing is accomplished unless someone cares". As the progress shows, you all have done a wonderful job in returning this magnificent place back to the way she was meant to be! Happy Holidays to the Felt Estate! PS- LOVE the new items for sale (mugs, etc)! Bought some of each! Also, the new sign looks great!

All that land, and those trees, and the quiet, and the weather blowing in off the lake, and the gorgeous changing of the seasons (getting snowed in in '67), and sand everywhere and in everything! I look forward to visiting soon and getting the straight scoop on the alligator pond, the bear caves, and the perpetual motion machine. Comments: In 1965 I attended Camp Villinova, which was part of Saint Augustine Seminary. The mansion was occupied by cloisterd nuns from South America before the first usage as the orginal seminary. To this dayI can walk the entire property and uncover the old maple house and perpetual motion machine. The beach house was still in use before errosion took it down. There was a dune north of the mansion called "Old Baldy" that was sold for sand mining purposes to support the seminary before its collaspe. It was the highest dune within miles of the lakeshore. A firing range was on the property for the camp and had an old dump where we use to break bottles and records from years back. The new seminary had a huge septic field just west of the property or left of the road going into the park. The beach house had electricity and water for showers and drinking. The top floor of the beach house had a large grill built in. Everyday at camp, we spent most of our time there. When i went to school there, the beach house was on its last legs due to the powerful errosion problems in the 70's. The pond was always in use, but fenced off later due to the cloistered nuns in the early 70's late 60's. We had tennis courts next to the old garage and it was used as an arts $ crafts house during the summer camp months. Camp Villinova ended in the very early 70's due to lack and interst and funding. We use to offer Seminary week instead, in order to perk interest in the school. Myself and Kevin Kimball, whom lived just off the property, were the only non-seminarians to attend. Most of the men came from Chicago and Detroit where the Augustine's still have a steadfast. The property was maintained by Brother Fred and Brither Chuck and the seminarians did all the house chores to maintain the property. Nuns from South American cooked for the school and aided the priests in there day to day activities. The seminary maintained retired priests also (what a way to end life). This property was the crown jewel of the Order of the Austines for years and fought to be maintained until the huge falloff of people joining priesthood.

Comments: My daughter wanted to be married in Saugatuck this summer (2005) at All Saints and an acquaitance at the school recommended the mansion as a reception site. Not only are we looking forward to our event there, I have read with great fascination the story. Did Dorr die in the home, too? Am planning to prepare a little history to give to our guests. Ever need a tour guide? Would love to do that! I live in Kalamazoo. Thanks for the great hospitality and your most gracious hostess/leasor, Diane Ybarra.

Comments: Well I grew up in Holland and when we were teen agers and were able to drive we would always go out to the mansion and tell scary stories handed down. Sometimes we would get out of the car and look around. It was always said about the mansion that it was haunted. Later when it became the seminary I was able to go inside one night on a weekend for a visit we went inside one of the big rooms and everybody was watching movies and having snacks. Never knew the real history of the mansion . came to this site after hearing about the mansion on the radio today so thought I"d look it up on the internet and came to this site . I would like to visit it soon now that I know it used to be where I used to go with my friends in my teen years. :)
